10 Ways to Prevent Hair Breakage

10 Ways to Prevent Hair Breakage

February 7, 2021

Below I am going to list 10 ways to stop your hair from breaking!

Recently I had a pretty ‘hairy’ experience during my last salon visit. I live in NYC and I was going to the Soul Cycle of salons. The trendiest and supposedly best spot in town. After my recent visit, I’m not sure if I’ll return.

I had a mix of balayage and highlights done this time (no different to any other time) and yet I experienced a lot of breakage as a result of bleach on my hair. My hair has never been ‘fragile’ or ‘dry’. My hair has always been resilient and in excellent condition. So when I noticed hair breakage after this trip to the salon, I was freaking out.

Most of the hair products in this post will restore the health of your hair and will cost you under $20 (and admittedly if you buy from my website I will make a teeny bit of commission- thanks!).

Here’s how I prevented my hair from further breakage and managed to save my hair.

1. IT’S A 10 HAIR MIRACLE MASK

Believe me when I tell you – THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS YOU CAN OWN FOR YOUR HAIR. Don’t believe me? Look at the other thousands of rave review. GET THIS FOR YOUR HAIR! This hair mask will make your hair shiny. It will restore the health of your hair. This is the BEST HAIR MASK ever! One treatment leaves your hair shiny and soft. Get it here.

I like to put some in my hair before I go to sleep and leave it in overnight, more on the ends than the roots.

2. USE A HAIR DETANGLING SPRAY BEFORE AND AFTER WASHING

A lot of conditioners that you will use whilst washing your hair will not detangle all those small and stubborn knots. I like to comb though my hair before I wash my hair. If there are any knots that need taking care of, I’ll use my trusty detangling spray.

Same goes for after washing my hair. If you are prone to knotty hair, then reach for the leave in hair product bottle before you attempt to brush. If you want to prevent your hair from breaking you want to avoid having to aggressively brush your hair.

My Personal FAVE is It’s A 10 Miracle Leave in Plus Keratin!

3. USE OLAPLEX

One day I saw a friend’s hair go from ‘meh’ to AMAZING! Her hair was so silky and shiny. Her hair looked perfect and in amazing condition. I asked her what shampoo she used and she introduced me to Olaplex.

This patented hair care line works differently to others. Olaplex takes cares of your hair on the inside and not the outside. Olaplex will definitely strengthen your hair preventing breakage.

I personally recommend after trial and error using steps 3, 4 and 5 of Olaplex. You can read more about that here.

4. DO NOT TOWEL DRY YOUR HAIR

I freak out whenever I go to to the hairdresser and they start scrunching my hair with a towel. Your hair is extremely fragile whilst wet. Instead of ‘rubbing’ your hair, you want to squeeze the moisture from it. Squeeze it before you get out of the shower without a towel and then again once in a towel. Friction will cause knots which will lead to hair breakage.

5. USE A PROPER HAIR BRUSH

You can read more about using a proper hair brush here. It is so important in making sure you find a hairbrush that will work with your type if hair. As mentioned above, a detangling spray will help but you still need to brush.

As this is a post about preventing hair breakage, I am going to recommend a Wet Brush for use after washing your hair. THIS IS THE BEST DETANGLING HAIR BRUSH EVER.

6. BRUSH YOU HAIR FROM THE BOTTOM

Careful brushing of your hair is extremely important for your hairs health. You also don’t want to keep brushing your hair over and over again unnecessarily.

The biggest tip I can give you to prevent breaking your hair whilst brushing it is to START FROM THE BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP. If you just yank at your hair from its roots, it will snap and break.

7. AIR DRY

It’s a well known fact that heat damages hair. Damaged hair breaks. If you have the time try to leave your hair to air dry for as long as possible and just ‘finish’ off drying with a hairdryer.

You want to make sure when leaving your hair in a towel-turban, that the towel isn’t too heavy or pulling on your hair. Your hair becomes elastic when wet and can be prone to breaking.

8. SILK PILLOWCASE

This works people. I used to wake up every morning looking like I had been attacked by the hair fairy. Well not any more. Remember, knots equals hair breakage, avoid knots in your hair with a silk pillowcase. Buy yourself a silk pillowcase. You and your hair will thank you for it.

9. TAKE BREAKS FROM WASHING

The truth is, if you want to prevent your hair from breaking, you need to do as little as you possibly can to it. That includes taking a break from washing your hair.

Nobody wants smelly or greasy hair but try to wash your hair at a maximum 4 times per week.

10. USE A PROTEIN TREATMENT

This would be the last step I would take to prevent my hair from breaking. If you are using It’s A 10 Miracle leave in plus keratin, then you are getting some additional protein for you hair. But if your hair is severely damaged you may need one large dosage to save your hair.

You can do this at a salon and now there are even some you can do yourself at home. Your hair needs protein to be strong and healthy just like your muscles.

So there you have it, these are the 10 ways I saved my hair from further breakage.

I highly recommend doing all of these things to prevent breakage. So good luck with your new healthy hair journey.

I have a terrible problem with hair breakage! I’m pinning this post so I have it to reference. I think I’ll go for the mask since it’s your fave, and I’m definitely intrigued with a silk pillowcase! That sounds luxurious!

I keep hearing about protein treatments and how great they are for breakage. Do you have a specific one you’d recommend?
