2020 eh? Has it been a complete disaster or are you able to look on the bright side of life and find the positives of this past year?
It’s morning, you’ve made your coffee (or cup of earl grey), you pick up your phone and start scrolling through insta. Within seconds you start seeing pictures of people in Tuscany or a friend who apparently has been ‘glamping’ somewhere that might be the Grand Canyon. You instantly get mad because you haven’t traveled anywhere this year. You’ve been trying to save lives as instructed by the government (be it a corrupt one at that). And you have spent the majority of the year in your pajamas with a messy bun hair-do.
You keep scrolling and then you see posts captioned ‘Wish I was here! TB to last year’ or ‘Is 2020 over yet fml!’. You haven’t noticed that your shoulders have now slumped. You’re so lost in your ‘woe is me’ moment that your cat seized the opportunity to drink the milk out of your cereal bowl. You’ve lost any pep or positivity that you awoke with. You’re convinced this year, has been a complete let down…
But has it?
What about all the things you have done this year? First off, you survived a freaking pandemic. You’re still operating and functioning in this day and age when all of us lost our lives as we once knew them over night.
And how many new things did you experience in 2020 that you never would have experienced otherwise?
Did you get out in nature more? Go somewhere close to your home that you have been meaning to go to for a while? I bet even if you just went for a walk around the block you appreciated that and mother nature a little more.
Maybe you had an awkward Zoom call with a colleague whilst she was breast feeding her child. The kind that was hard to understand what she was saying because her voice was drowned out by the sound of suckling. Everyone who’s anyone has had an embarrassing moment on Zoom this year lets face it! My husband has had dumbbells floating behind his head during a video call with his boss (I was working my shoulders and our apartment is very small…) Oh and then there was also that time my birthday unicorn balloon was his new backdrop…
Hands up if you’ve had a crazy hairstyle moment! Perhaps you turned yourself into a majestic mermaid with pink hair (apparently a hairdresser’s worst nightmare fyi). And that is something you would not have been able to do had you have been going into the office to meet with Bob to discuss the monthly expenditure reports.
I cut my own hair – something I haven’t done since I was 5, and lucky for me it went a lot better this time round (there weren’t any trips to Wonky-Town).
I bet you also found some time to reconnect with friends and family (be it virtually at that). Some who perhaps you hadn’t spoken to in forever. And maybe you mended some once strained relationships during this time too.
I don’t know about you, but I definitely managed to get some serious and much needed R&R. My body and brain couldn’t be more grateful for the break. I was definitely on the verge of hospitalization (I’ll write more about my burn out in another post at some point). Pre-pandemic, I had no plans to pop on the breaks. Lucky for me, the bigger powers intervened.
My point is, stop writing off this year. Yes it’s been extremely challenging. But, do you not feel as if you have more appreciation for certain things like breathing freely in the open air? Or being able to ask a stranger for help?
We will do these things, as well as many more things that we miss, again soon…
So stop letting FOMO rule your day.
Even though it may feel like it, the world isn’t going anywhere. It is still spinning. Everything will all be there when we are able to next enjoy it- safely, again.
Take a deep breath, thank your lucky stars and try to appreciate this moment in time. Because you won’t get it back.
And if this post hasn’t picked your spirit up, google Monty Python’s ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ and sing along. That should do the trick!
As always,
Live with Love,
The Bimbo in Limbo xxxx
