Being injured is the worst when you are making progress on your fitness journey.
Below is some advice for how to remain positive until you can resume activity once more.
Take a deep breath and remember this too shall pass…
Finding out you may be about to embark on a a long road of recovery can be devastating, but take a deep breath and remind yourself that you will recover. You will get better and stronger, as long as you don’t give up.
Allow yourself to relax and rest!
If you’re reading this post, chances are you’re probably the type of person who is hard on themselves or a life-go-getter who hates being grounded. In which case your body and mind will benefit in the long ‘run’ by taking some much needed R&R.
Set New Goals!
Are you a runner with a leg injury? Why not take this time to get stronger in that upper body that you have been neglecting? Try pull-ups or push-ups. If you long for cardio, just modify the movements so you are able to perform them faster and with a higher rep volume. And there’s always sit ups.
Relish in having some new found spare time.
If you were taking working out seriously enough to get injured, then chances are you were working out for a few hours a week. Think about something you’ve always wished you had more time to do. Visit a new place in town or learn to cook and use this new free time in your day to do these things.
Look for inspiration.
After I had been hit by a car and could no longer run my first marathon, I was devastated. My husband and I started binge-watching The Amazing Race and were introduced to Bethany Hamilton who was competing on that season. If you aren’t familiar with Bethany, she is amazing and the biggest inspiration! Bethany was a professional surfer who lost her left arm in a horrific shark attack incident, but she still returned to surfing professionally once she learned to adapt to her new-normal. Learning about Bethany’s story made me realize how lucky I am and anything is possible with the right mindset.
So try to read about some real-life heroes for encouragement and inspiration! I highly recommend Bethany’s book;
Be Unstoppable: The Art of Never Giving Up
I hope this helps. Hang in there, you will be better than before-trust me. Feel free to leave your comments or message and I’ll try to respond with some encouragement!
