One life change that I have made since the beginning of the Pandemic, is I have hardly been wearing any make-up! Now for many of you, the au-natural look may be your go to, but I have been wearing a full face of makeup since year nine at school (to you Americans, that’s eighth grade or Harry Potter in The Prisoner of Azkaban!) There were countless times during my school assembly where my headmaster would single me out and march me to the girl’s bathroom so that I could ‘wash the muck’ off my face. Of course I would sneak to the loo and reapply on my lunch break!
This year, I was on the verge of a major burn so it was a huge blessing when I suddenly didn’t have to be ‘switched on’ and ready to go all of the time. I decided to stop everything completely. And this included trying to look ‘put together’. At some point during lockdown, I looked in the mirror and actually began to prefer myself just as I was. Now, as someone who has suffered greatly from body dysmorphia and had been told they were ugly as a child, this was a massive shocker! In my reflection I saw clear skin, rosy cheeks and not a bloody wrinkle in sight! Not bad going for a girl in her thirties. For the first time in my life I was feeling so confident I even taped an audition for a big time casting director without any makeup on!
I began to wonder if it were genetics. Or perhaps it was just a result of recouping some rest as a result of losing my job. But the more I thought about it, the more I began to think it was because of the following factors.
Listed below are some of my tips that I believe contribute to having a well ‘looked after’ ‘makeup-free’ face with a regimented skincare routine which I’ll be sharing in another Beauty Boop post.
SKINCARE 101
- Drink plenty of water. Yes, it’s the blooming obvious but I drink lots and lots of water. I believe hydration from the inside is key to ageless skin.
- Eat your five a day! I love my veggies. Admittedly I love cake and chocolate too but I definitely notice a difference for the worse if I eat lots of sugar (this includes alcohol too!), so limit these treats for a flawless face.
- Sleep. I can hear you thinking “duh! Obvs…”
- Be kind to your skin. When choosing beauty products try to avoid ones that contain parabens, alcohol, sulphates and other irritating ingredients. Try to go for a more calming feel than a harsh warming sensation with product application. If you feel any burning- stop using what is causing that sensation!
- Try not to wash your face too often. One time as a waitress, a woman sat at my table celebrating her birthday. I assumed she was 35, you can imagine how shocked I was when she told me she was 50, she didn’t have a single wrinkle and this wasn’t because of any unnatural solutions. I asked her what her secret was and she said she never washes her face. Since then, I prefer to use a toner or wipe to remove any makeup and only wash my face with water and a cleanser 2-3 times a week.
- Don’t apply oil based products before drying your hair. Oil burns the skin when heated so it totally makes sense. Apply any skincare products with oil after you have used your hair dryer.
- Do a handstand! Yup, you now think that I’ve totally lost the plot and are about to unsubscribe- but wait! When you are in an inversion the blood rushes to your face and now there are all these crazy facials that either use sharp tiny needles to bring blood flow to your face or even that vampire facial. So this is totally a thing!!!! Oh and if you can’t do a handstand just lean back on the arm of the sofa lol or take a trip to Disney and ride a roller coaster.
- Switch it up! You know how you exercise with the same routine and stop reaping benefits? Well in my opinion, it’s the same with your face and any other beauty regime. Always be open to trying new products. You could even just add another step into your daily skincare routine. The Korean’s love a 12 step, I however think 5 works – more on this very soon.
That wraps up all my tips to ensure your face stays resilient and looks radiant.
There we have it! Skincare 101!
