I am not one to be serious (often). But at this time of year, more than ever, I believe it’s important to draw attention to this subject.
At this time of year, people (NOT just women) start to worry, stress and induce anxiety on themselves about what they are eating over the holiday season. Some may develop eating disorders from this pressure. This is all a result of the media and the self-image standards projected onto society.
2020 has been a year of talking about a lot of taboo subjects. Netflix’s The Crown touched on this subject when recreating the late Princess Diana’s personal struggles.
It’s time to realize these are issues that can be avoided. Lives can be saved. Yes, sadly people die as a result of an eating disorder.
Let’s end Body Shaming.
Let’s all get some perspective on what IS important- physical and MENTAL health. And again, it is not just WOMEN that suffer. It is men as well. But just like with most things, men are better at hiding their feelings (sorry fellas).
The bottom line is celebrities and influencers need to do a better job of owning up to all of the ‘help’ their photos and videos get in making them look flawless. Photo Editing tools can literally make a celebrity look twenty pounds ‘skinnier’ as well as add many other illusions.
So much smoke and mirrors go into celebrities posts and stories.
Filters, carefully considered angles, professional light fixtures, post-production in the editing suite and of course, cosmetic surgery. And I’m not just talking about Botox… have you seen the videos of the ponytail facelift?!? I’m sure when writing Frankenstein, Mary Shelley didn’t actually think these kind of procedures would be a reality one day.
It’s not up to the likes of Celeste Barber to show us the truth. Although I believe she should come with an automatic must follow for anyone with an instagram account so they can keep a sense of perspective.
Celebrities need to own up to the fact that they get help to look the way they look.
Instead, they deny the help of a ‘doctor’. Remember that episode of keeping up with the Kardashians where Kylie Jenner denies having her lips done?! They refuse to openly admit they go under the knife and slice off their stomach fat and have it stitched back onto their buttocks. They NEVER post about the dangers of these unnecessary procedures. Nor do they own up to the extreme measures they take to stay thin- sleeping tablets and diuretics.
I’ve have met Jlo in the flesh and yes she is THAT beautiful. But the picture she posted recently that made our jaw drops still had ‘help’. You expect me to believe their isn’t a blemish on her body?
And what about Adele? As soon as she revealed her weight loss transformation, she was PRAISED as if she were the second coming of Jesus. Instead the media should have been using headlines such as “Still Beautiful. Adele has ALWAYS been beautiful”.
We also need a male who is of extreme influence, to bravely admit he suffers or has suffered with an eating disorder and for the mainstream media to cover it. So we rid ourselves of the idea that it is only females who suffer with body image related issues.
There are 11 year olds going on juice cleanses for crying out loud. CHILDREN.
Women of influence only talk about how amazing their bodies are during or after pregnancy these days in attempt to scream “See how normal I am?!” What about people who haven’t carried a baby or won’t? What about changes that happen to men as we age?
Change is inevitable why can’t we just embrace it and teach younger generations to have a healthy mindset about that?
Why don’t we boast about all the things our bodies can do that don’t include giving birth? Being healthy is the most important thing and biggest life blessing.
If you suspect someone you know is suffering, offer support.
Lastly, remember beauty comes from within.
So be a kind, caring and compassionate human.
And if you need a reminder of how amazing you are then check out this post.
As always,
Live with Love,
