First off let me start by saying these are my opinions and mine only. You have to do what’s right for you and your family!
Eek! We’re pregnant! But where does a baby sleep?!
It was time. Time to start figuring out what we needed for our baby. As first time parents we are clueless. We knew nothing. We didn’t know there were so many options for newborn babies to sleep in once home from the hospital. We had no idea about the differences between a bassinet or a crib (or that eventually we would need both).
The only thing we did know, is that we wanted the SAFEST environment for our Newborn to sleep in!
We asked our parents their thoughts, and they would just reassure us that whatever we decided would be fine and not to panic. Then they would relay tales about how their parents would just stick them in a drawer to sleep… Or they would remind us that we could always use the stroller bassinet attachment if we couldn’t make up our minds. Sigh…
But this is our first child! And we wanted him to have everything he needed not just to make do, and we wanted some reassurance he was safe!
Cue hours of research… and wait! Do we need a bassinet or a crib?!
When it came to choosing between a bassinet or a crib for our newborn, first we had to learn the differences. The main things being the bassinet is just for the first few months (weight dependent and until the baby is able to roll over) and second, you’re most likely going to use a full sized crib in a different room to where you will be sleeping because if you live in a city like New York, who has that space?
We knew we wanted a bassinet of some sort as a starting point so our baby can be close to us.
To get ideas on what was on the market, we took to google to see what there was. Hey Snoo and Halo Bassinet… I asked my social media followers their thoughts and again these two bassinets for newborns were recommended yet again.
In my opinion, the Snoo and the Halo Bassinet have completely different intentions for a sleeping newborn (the Snoo trying to emulate the womb and the Halo making it easy to feed the baby without leaving the bed). Also, they have extremely different price points (the Snoo being $1600).
When looking at both products online my initial thoughts were these do not look sturdy. What about our dog?!
We are those people. The people who have a little pug who thinks he’s a human. So he has to be involved in everything. This immediately ruled out the halo bassinet for me. One of the big pluses of the halo is that you can roll over in bed and take the baby out without having to get up to nurse. This gave us concern that our pug would try to get into it or add additional stress training him not to do so, so we crossed the Halo off our list.
We opted not to get the Snoo because we read lots of reviews about parents struggling with the crossover from the Snoo to the crib. And way less importantly, the Snoo did not go with the aesthetic of my apartment. I had my heart on something all white if I could get it!
But most importantly – WE WANTED SOMETHING SAFE!!!

PROS:
- It is designed with SAFETY in mind!!!!
- It is portable! You can move it anywhere in your home.
- Breathability of the mesh lining means your little one will be cool whilst sleeping.
- You don’t have to worry about any limbs getting stuck in slats thanks to its innovative design.
- If your baby does roll over with face against the mesh, it will still be able to breathe (again make sure the sleeper is not near any potential hazards!).
- The portable sleeper is bigger than a standard bassinet, so if you have a long baby that stays within other safety guidelines (weight and movement recommendations- read below!) they won’t have to be moved to a standard crib so soon.
- The portable sleeper is eco friendly and made from toxic free materials.
- The portable sleeper has a wooden frame and this makes it extremely sturdy in my opinion compared to the other mentioned bassinets.
- It collapses making it easy to store away when not using it. (Ideal for small apartments).
- The portable sleeper is easy to assemble.
- Comes in two color options; all white and white with beech.
- It is currently priced at $249.99
CONS:
- For some people the fact it’s slightly bigger may be an issue.
- It requires assembly (But as mentioned, that part is very easy).
Why or when would I use the BreathableBaby Breathable Mesh Portable Sleeper?
- I can see it being ideal if for some reason your postpartum recovery is challenging and preventing you from being able to sleep in your bed. You can keep it in the lounge with you next to your couch.
- If you are working from home, you can keep this sleeper in your “office” and not have to rely on a baby monitor.
- If you need to put your baby down for a short while and think it may fall asleep when you may not be able to watch it, the portable sleeper will be a safer option than a lounger or bouncy chair.
- Depending on the size of the car, you can use it for travel.
- It could be the ideal additional sleeper if you rely on family for daycare help.

We chose the BreathableBaby Breathable Mesh Portable Sleeper for the following reasons:
- It’s safety features; the mesh makes us ‘breathe’ a sigh of relief…

- Again (the least important reason you should decide on anything for your baby) the aesthetic. It’s truly modern and contemporary which fits in perfectly with our apartment.
