Vegan? Plant based? Vegetarian? Trying to be trendy and down with the cool kids? If so, chances are you’re eating tofu. Or attempting to eat it.
When I first went vegan, I just avoided cooking any sort of plant based protein. I was happy just eating vegetables. But then I fell in love with weight lifting and knew I had to up my protein intake.
I tried tofu, and couldn’t get used to the rubbery and watery texture. So instead I would always opt for Tempeh.
I ate so much tempeh that I needed a break from it…
So it was back to Tofu.
After many failed attempts to make tofu enjoyable, I finally discovered Two Hacks that actually make it a delicious source of protein!
Hack 1: SQUEEZE IT
Tofu is full of water, a bit like a cucumber (even the extra firm tofu) so before cooking you need to strain it.
To do this take several pieces of kitchen towel, wrap up the Tofu and gently put pressure on it using the palm of your hand. Do this repeatedly until the tofu is no longer releasing water. You don’t want to squeeze too hard or just with your fingers as the tofu may crumble.
Hack 2: COOK WITH OIL
When you’re trying to be healthy, one of your instincts may be to cut out fats. But remember some fats are good for you, so it’s ok to use some oil in your cooking. Cooking the tofu in coconut or olive oil will make it harden, making it less rubbery. You have to remove the water first otherwise it will just steam itself- so make sure you read this entire post!
And that’s it! Two Simple Hacks That Will Make You Like Tofu. Give them a go! You can season or marinade the tofu too. After doing these two steps I like my tofu with some pink salt and black pepper.
I hope this helps. Please leave your comments and share this post!
